Looking for a tabletop featuring people that change gender, turn into animals, suffer from madcap magical items gone bad, and engage in all sorts of zany martial arts battles? Then look no further!
Based on Ranma ½, played in FATE Accelerated, I bring you Half-Plus (½+).
The basic premise: in modern Japan, teenage martial artists begin to explore the meaning of their own lives as they face curses, magic, martial arts rivals, sudden engagements, and more. Wuxia and martial arts tropes abound, magic makes its presence more and more known, and several people can turn into animals or change gender often against their will.
The inter-character drama is just as important, if not more important, than the martial arts fights. EXPECT DAYTIME SOAP OPERA LEVELS OF INTERCONNECTED LUNACY.
It's also going to be generally encouraged to explore character identities, whether its gender or sexuality or just what it means to be yourself.
This is an interest check and brainstorming plurk. We're still looking at a year out, or thereabouts.
Q&A TIME
Q: FATE Accelerated? I thought you were looking at a bunch of other systems!
A: I did, and I couldn't find anything to make battles as snappy as I'd like, or could handle out-of-battle scenes very well at all. That said, using FATE Accelerated isn't set in stone, if you have a suggestion for a better system let me know.
Q: I don't know anything about Ranma!?
A: That's not really a question! But that's fine. Just know that it can bounce between emotional and comedic, but often swings more comedic than not. And while the original touches on real issues surrounding gender or similar, the fandom tends to go a lot deeper into that sort of thing, and I do want to bring that to the tabletop scene.
Q: I don't know anything about FATE Accelerated!
A: Not even a question mark this time...? Well, it's fine. I (and likely some fellow players) can help you through it. And an advantage of FATE Accelerated is that it's a pretty simple system, too.

Ryoko Mikami, cranky shrine maiden! But when not around family, assumes the secret identity Ken Mikami, Ryoko's made-up martial artist brother! Has no idea how to femininity and honestly is pretty vague on masculinity but kung fu is more fun than kagura dance
Unfortunately, they share a body with Tachibana no Yoshiko, a shrine maiden from centuries ago who ascended as a living god and somehow ended up trapped in Mikami. She's about 30 times more femme than Ryoko/Ken and also has no idea how 21st century Japan works, but has a LOT of opinions about it. Whenever the one in control gets too emotionally heated, they switch places, so if both are equally angry they can swap back and forth to have shouting matches with each other using the same mouth.
4. Anything you want to see in game? Honestly I'm unlikely to have the time to join but I like talking about future tabletop and came up with an idea ages ago and I really like it

3. Character concept? There’s a super dramatic fucker out there who is every chuuni’s wet dream. Inheritor of an ancient deadly martial art school, has a cursed arm, has lots of enemies, wears all black and broods in the corner...you know the deal.
And then MY guy is just some Joe Schmoe who by total coincidence looks identical to this asshole and get mistaken for him all the damn time.
4. Anything you want to see in game? I’ll be honest I know very little about Ranma and might have skipped signing up for this one if I hadn’t come up with a character concept I really like. So I got nothing for this and if you have to choose between me and someone else who is a big Ranma fan for the party, choose them.

3. Character concept? Okay but I kind of want to do something with a newbie martial artist girl(?) who's half-alien. Like her alien mom fell in love with an earth man or woman and settled on earth. Maybe alien mom's a shapechanger? And my girl has shapechanging too, but it doesn't always come so naturally, so she's trying to learn tai chi so she can get more in touch with her body, because sometimes she'll get stuck in an assumed form in the worst, most awkward way. (And I say 'girl' and 'she' because that's what she was assigned as at birth, but I suspect she's actually genderfluid.)
4. Anything you want to see in game? TINY OLD PEOPLE. Why is everyone over the age of eighty so tiny? No one knows.

Basically my Sundays are busy with other games and I need to keep the daytime during the week free for substitute teaching, but otherwise some fairly consistent free times.

3. Character concept? I've got the makings of...something or other; I deffo wanna do an NB character, and my first thought name-wise is Kaoru Tanaka; a former shut-in who's Got Some Shit going on. Potentially in a deal with a Kasha to work off both theirs parent's debt for doing Shady Shit, and their own debt for inaction/general slothen tendencies. Haven't decided if they start cis and eventually awaken to their NB-ness or if they're NB at the start. Either way, the kasha very potentially lives in their shadow and basically drags them along into fighting. This is still a work in progress.
4. Anything you want to see in game? I'll be honest I know little about the series, but if we get a relationship chart that's as tangled as the last one, that'll be the best possible scenario.

A local tanuki, Daisan-Gyo brags about being one of the most influential and powerful tanuki in the neighborhood (and a descendant of legendary youkai Inugami Gyobu), but nobody in the local youkai community really believes them.
Completely unrelatedly, a new transfer student has arrived! The eccentric and naive Takara Nukatabe, who is from somewhere unspecific, even further out in the sticks. They don't seem to quite understand, like.... normal human things, but they're enthusiastic and really want to make friends with everybody they can!
4. Anything you want to see in game? Besides the vaguest idea of "the youkai masquerade gets broken", nothing in particular.

Punk of a trans girl who has a thousand curses on her due to a major fuckup on her part (basically she just wouldn't shut up when telling off a god in disguise and kept getting cursed which just pissed her off more). She keeps turning into all kinds of forms, every single one female, and had to adjust her fighting style to embrace the unpredictability of her changes. Has barely learned a thing from being cursed and keeps picking fights.

Transwoman local champion of Extreme Martial Arts eSports, including such competitions as Full Contact Maroi Party (misspelling intentional). Has a hypercompetitive father who primarily judges her on Trophies Earned Per Semester. (The good news is he's highly accepting of her transness.)
Somehow, she got cursed with the classic sex-hopping body situation, and she wants the exact opposite of what most people with this sort of curse want - a way to lock herself into a more feminine form permanently!
4. Anything you want to see in game? Weird Martial Arts Competitions are a must-have component. It'd also be fun to have at least one person who is in love with both her forms and just cannot get it in their head that it's the same damn person!!!
5. Link your favorite nostalgic anime op/ed! Due to a MIDI of this being the autoplaying BGM on a Ranma fansite I read way too much when I was like eleven, I thought this was one of the Ranma movie themes for way longer than I normally like to admit...

3. Character concept? Kiyoko Kawakami, Dramatic Delinquent
She used to be an obnoxious wealthy Kendo Captain who bullied everyone in school, flaunting her intelligence and wealth. Then the family went bankrupt and she learned it was all fake. With all her accolades gone, she turned to other means for success. In particular, a street gang. While still over the top as ever, she seeks to be the strongest she can possibly be.
POSSIBLE CURSES:
- in her attempts to gain success, Kiyoko found a magic scroll to wish for her deepest desire. She wished to become the most feared being on Earth. The scroll chose to interpret this in a special way. If she ever touches the Earth, aka dirt... she becomes a tiny T-Rex.
- A former bully cursed her to become a frog whenever Insert Gimmick happens. Imagine a frog wielding a sword.
- Same as above but a memory spell of some kind that temporarily leads to forgetting who she fighting or why or if she hates someone or loves someone.
Regardless of which curse, Kiyoko believes that by finding True Love, her curse will be lifted and she’ll have everything she’s supposed to again. She’ll do whatever it takes to marry the strongest fighter she can.

Near the river, a young frog swam around, envious of all the pretty human girls that would visit with their partners. She couldn't understand where these feelings came from, but they pounded in her chest with an intensity she couldn't describe
Through Magical Means, she managed to get her wish. She was transformed into a human girl, with a solid cover identity as as a normal young girl. She could, theoretically, live as a human girl in peace. However, there's a catch. Kiyoko must find true love before graduation, or she'll transform back into a frog forever. If she behaves in an "uncouth" matter, as determined by whoever created the curse, she could temporarily turn back into a frog. So, Kiyoko tries to present herself as a polite, helpful, perfect student, in the most dramatically flamboyant ways she can, all while trying to find her mysterious True Love.
However, jealous of this mysterious transfer student, a rival at school cursed Kiyoko to become a "violent birdbrain." As such, whenever the conditions of that curse are met (such as Malevolent Entity), Kiyoko forgets her reasons for acting "proper" or that she was ever a frog, fully believing she's a bird who's been cursed to be a human. Until this curse wears off, she acts as a violent delinquent eager to attack any human who gets in her way.
[May add more curses as transformations if I can get them to work well mechanically with hindrances or positives.]
Availability Free basically every afternoon or night of the week after 5 PM EST. Sunday is the only day that could be a concern, as I'm busy with another game from 3 to 7 EST.
